Rwanda is in the third and final phase of testing a vaginal ring containing antiretrovirals, which, if successful, could provide an important female-controlled method of HIV prevention. Malawi, Rwanda, South Africa and Zimbabwe have all been selected to conduct the final phase of the trial. Phases I and II – conducted in Kenya, Malawi, Rwanda, South Africa – assessed the safety and acceptability of a daily application of a gel containing the ARV, dapivirine. Phase I trials involved small numbers of women, followed by expanded safety trials, Phase I/II, which gathered additional safety data among more participants over longer periods. Once the safety trials are complete, longer-term safety and efficacy trials begin. Phase III trials are conducted among high-risk participants so that researchers can see if there is a difference in infection rates between women who use the active microbicide product versus those who use a placebo. This phase looks specifically at the efficacy and gathers information to proceed with putting the product on the general market.
In Rwanda, the trials are being conducted by a local NGO, Project Ubuzima, with the International Partnership for Microbicides. The project has carried out safety trials for dapivirine gel among more than 60 women and has conducted an HIV incidence study among 1,250 female VCT clients and 800 high-risk women in the capital, Kigali, in preparation for the final phase.
- May 2011 - Kenya is set to unveil a new medical compound
Human trials of various products — microbicides — have been completed in Kisumu, Nairobi and Mombasa. Findings by the Kenya Medical Research Institute (Kemri) indicate that a microbicide that is 50 per cent effective, given to just 30 per cent of the population will reduce the number of HIV infections in the country by more than half.
A microbicide is a substance that can be incorporated in a lubricant, gel or barrier such as a diaphragm that will stop HIV transmission during sex.
According to a researcher at Kemri Betty Njoroge, microbicide products are formulated for topical administration before intercourse to protect against transmission of HIV/Aids and sexually transmitted infections in women and girls. The product comes in different types — creams, gels and rings designed for vaginal insertion or application.
The primary objective of the study was to assess and compare the safety of the use of the different types of microbicides in healthy, sexually active, HIV-negative women.

- Specific microbicides can protect against HIV
AIDS Research and Therapyjournal has published the results of a research focused on the use of lubricants, originally designed for vaginal application. The research has also developed and tested new, rectal specific, formulations.
Prof. Rohan's group, set in the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences in the School of Pharmacy at the University of Pittsburgh, has formulated four different lubricants, both water and lipid based, and in different formats which are currently being tested in clinical trials.
According to the Professor Rohan, this research represents a first stage in the production of targeted microbicidal products that will provide a basis for the inclusion of different types of antibiotics, antivirals, and other drugs. These new products, if successful, will contribute to stop the spread of HIV.

- 20 July 2010 CAPRISA project results released at the XVIII International AIDS Conference
The results of the CAPRISA004 project have been reported on 19th July 2010 by the Centre for the AIDS Programme of Research in South Africa (CAPRISA), during the 1st day of the International AIDS Conference.
The project conducted relevant studies on an antiretroviral microbicide gelcontaining tenofovir - an antiretroviral drug widely used in the treatment of HIV. The microbicide proved itself 39% effective in reducing a woman’s risk of becoming infected with HIV during sex and 51% effective in preventing genital herpes infections in the women participating in the trial.
A great results that also CHAARM partners are glad to announce, fostering their commitment in the research of effective microbicides.
CAPRISA was established in 2002 under the NIH-funded Comprehensive International Program of Research on AIDS (CIPRA) by five partner institutions; University of KwaZulu-Natal, University of Cape Town, University of Western Cape, National Institute for Communicable Diseases, and Columbia University in New York. CAPRISA is a designated UNAIDS Collaborating Centre for HIV Prevention Research.

- 16 July 2010 The XVIII International AIDS Conference. Charting the path of research and policies forward: “Rights here, right now”
The XVIII edition of the International AIDS Conference takes place from Sunday 18 July to 23 July and represents the occasion to gather all the stakeholders involved in the debate on HIV: from researchers to politicians and patients. An estimated number of 25,000 participants, including 2,000 journalists from more than 100 countries, are expected to attend the conference.
The conference theme “Rights here, right now” was chosen by the organizers, with a view to emphasize the central importance of protecting and promoting human rights in dealing with HIV issues. This means that concrete measures need to be put in place to protect both the most vulnerable and those affected by HIV: like for example, the right for dignity and self-determination for key affected populations; equal access to health care; life-saving prevention and treatment programmes; and the right to evidence-based interventions (based on evidence, rather than ideology).
Prof. Shattock, from St. George's University of London, one of the CHAARM project partners is in charge of co- chairing the session on the Mechanism of Transmission of HIV and giving a presentation on HIV transmission entitled “Understanding mucosal immunity and HIV transmission: the way to new prevention technologies”.
